future of learning
What Sort of Research Should We Be Doing on Blended Learning?
A foundation advisor asked, “Is there a smart approach donors might take with blended learning research?” Following are seven areas that could use some attention.
Smart Cities: Raleigh/Durham
Research Triangle Park (RTP) is the nation’s largest R&D center with 7,000 acres and 170 companies including DuPont, Glaxo, IBM, EMC as well as NIH, EPA, and CDC. The triangle refers to three top-notch universities: Duke in Durham, UNC In Chapel Hill, and NC State in Raleigh. There’s also NC Central (an HBCU), a leader in biomanufacturing.
NGLC 4: Grants Available for More Breakthrough Blends
With higher expectations, daunting challenges, and new technologies, it's a good time to start over. Creating new schools from scratch--particularly high schools--is a timely opportunity.
Detroit: Pulling Out of the Death Spiral
“The Motor City’s traditional district remains the worst-performing big-city school operator in both the Midwest and the nation,” reported RiShawn Biddle. “With 69 percent of its fourth-graders and 57 percent of eighth-graders being functionally illiterate in 2011, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, Detroit has become infamous for perpetuating educational neglect and malpractice.” Biddle notes, “the district’s financial mismanagement has been even more spectacular.”
Rocketship to Open 8 Blended Learning Schools in Nashville
Rocketship Education announces its plan to open and operate eight public charter schools in Nashville, starting in the fall of 2014, under its charter authorized by the Achievement School District (ASD). Rocketship has been approved by the ASD to open an additional eight schools in Memphis.

SXSWedu: Keeping it Weird
Much like Austin, SXSWedu kept it weird for the third annual conference. Weird in a good way. Suits traded in for boots and jeans. Typical presentations traded in for interactive discussions. Its one of the few conferences that skips the exhibit hall and puts more emphasis on networking time. SXSWedu also features the best music of any education conference. From music before session starts to live performances by Wheeler Brothers and Alpha Rev we felt the Austin music spirit. For more on the first part of the week check out our halftime report.
Gates: “We Need Even More Risk-Takers”
SXSWedu Executive Producer Ron Reed’s introduced Bill Gates as a “passionate, articulate voice for modernizing teaching and learning.” The standing room only crowd agreed. Gates delivered the closing keynote to a packed house at the Austin Convention Center on Thursday morning and left the attendees feeling inspired to take the week’s lessons back home to our own corners of the world.
