Sam Smith is a director of Western Governors University, an online and competency-based program. He said, "We’ve found that a close working relationship with an academic advisor is the most important factor to completion. That’s a much more active role than the 1970s approach of creating a student center and hoping that students that need help seek it out. Weekly check-ins with an advisor ensures that students stay on track.
Educator Demonstrates STEM Concepts With Origami
An educator at Jersey Shore Middle School in Jersey Shore, PA published a video on origami hang gliders that float on waves of air. The video explores the ways that the paper hang gliders model the same concepts as hang glider pilots, surfers and more to create lift to carry weight over a wave of air or water.
Students Report On the Oakland Occupy Movement
Students from the Media Enterprise Alliance at KDOL-TV reported on the Occupy Movement at Frank Ogawa Plaza and other locations in Oakland, Calif. in late January 2012. These students demonstrated talented reporting, telling the story of the protest through a different lens than the mainstream media.

Voting ends today on SchoolTube's video competition Going Mindless, which encourages students to express change in their schools or communities by modeling the youthful, positive change by the R&B band Mindless Behavior. The band will pick their favorite student video to award an exclusive Mindless Behavior concert at their school.
Middle Schoolers Flash Mob for Reading
Sedgwick Middle School in West Hartford, CT created and published a flash mob dance on SchoolTube to encourage reading to the tune of the hit Black Eyed Peas song "I Gotta Feeling" in their own rendition "Gotta Keep Reading." It's evident that the middle schoolers in this video are having a lot of fun expressing how much they love reading. This would be a fun tune to play before in-class reading time to get students excited and focused on reading.
