Infographic: Online Students vs. Traditional Students

OnlinePHDprograms.com, an online Ph.D. degree provider, published an excellent infographic this week on “Online Students vs. Traditional Students.” The infographic looks at the reasons students choose online learning over traditional classrooms and environments, the courses they take, and the outcomes from online learning. In light of the economic downturn, many students find that online learning is a more cost effective solution and efficient management of time. Their choice to go online oftentimes reflect positively in the outcomes. Some interesting facts from the graphic include:

  • “Nearly 30 percent of higher education students take at least one course online.”
  • “Online course enrollment has increased 19 percent, while traditional enrollment has increased only two percent” in the last seven years.
  • Online learning offers a wide range of opportunity and degrees across a spectrum of disciplines.
  • The percentage of academic leaders who have rated online courses the same or superior to traditional face-to-face courses has increased since 2003.
  • “79 percent of participants said they had hired an applicant with online degree qualifications” in the last year.

While reviewing the infographic, one section was unclear – retention rates. From the two sets of data, including online students and traditional students, it was unclear whether online students have better or worse retention rates compared to traditional students. The infographic states that the numbers reflect the interest in curriculum as well as quality of courses, staff and administration. It’s likely that many other factors contribute the retention rates at these leading schools.
