Data Quality Campaign to Release New Analysis on How States Are Using Education Data to Improve Student Achievement

WHAT: On Nov. 19, 2013, the Data Quality Campaign (DQC) will release its annual state-by-state analysis, Data for Action 2013, which highlights states’ progress using education data systems to improve student achievement. Initial findings suggest that states are changing their vision from data collection for compliance to data collection for effective use in the state house, in the district office, in the classroom, and at the kitchen table. Also, for the first time ever, two states have achieved all 10 State Actions to Ensure Effective Data Use, DQC’s roadmap for state policymakers.
Some other key findings include:

  • A growing number of states are providing teachers and parents with appropriate access to their students’ longitudinal data.
  • Despite recent financial challenges, more states than ever are funding their data systems, reflecting a belief that data are critical in the decision making process at all levels.
  • States take seriously their responsibility to ensure that data are used appropriately and student data are kept private and secure. States such as Oklahoma are passing legislation to establish new procedures and safeguards for the collection and use of student data.

DQC and several national organizations will also hold a Twitter Town Hall from 2 to 3 p.m. EST on Nov. 19 for the public release of Data for Action 2013 with the hashtag #DFA2013.
