Idaho Parents, Students Show Support for School Choice at the Capitol

Leslie Mauldin from Coalition of Idaho Charter School Families reported on Idaho’s Digital Learning Day activities today.
Hundreds of parents and students attended today’s 2012 Capitol Day event in Boise, Idaho. Run annually by the Coalition of Idaho Charter School Families, the day stands as a fun and educational way to introduce children to the workings of state government and the legislative process.
Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett and Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna, advocated for bold reforms such as lifting the cap on charter schools and providing equity in funding. These reforms are the necessary next steps to continue the reforms started last year in the Idaho Legislature.
Dr. Bennett and Superintendent Luna thanked teachers, parents, charter school and virtual school advocates for their support of the Luna/Otter Education Reforms and for moving the cause of education reform forward.
Lt Governor Brad Little, when preparing to sign the Proclamation creating “Idaho Public School Choice Week” agreed that providing Idaho’s children with multiple educational options improves academic performance overall.
Idaho Capitol Day also provides parents, students and supporters the opportunity to speak directly with their elected officials to express the importance of public charter and public virtual schools to the community. There are over 7,500 Idaho students who are not able to benefit from charter and virtual school public education in Idaho due to existing caps and other arbitrary limitations.
This year parents, students and supporters heard from school choice advocates such as Indiana’s State Supervisor of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett, Lt. Governor Brad Little, Idaho Superintendent Tom Luna, Senate Chairman John Goedde and House Chairman Bob Nonini.
