Learning about Teaching

The initial results of the Gates Foundation’s Measures of Effective Teaching are important but not all that surprising; highly effective teachers are substantially better at the 7cs:
Care: cares about students and tries to understand how they feel
Control: creates an respectful and on-task environment
Clarify: has good ways of explaining difficult things
Challenge: students say they learn a lot very day
Captivate: makes lessons interesting
Confer: students speak up and teachers respects ideas
Consolidate: checks understanding and teacher feedback helps
The report defends the use of value-added data and student feedback in teacher evaluations
