Creating College Opportunities for Parents and Students

Barriers to getting into, paying for and persisting through college inhibit many students and adults across the country from achieving their dream of graduating from college. The Kansas City Scholars Program (KC Scholars) recognized that one of the biggest barriers is the financial burden. The scholarship and college savings match program, incubated out of the Kauffman Foundation, “aims to help low- and modest- income students and adult learners finance their post-secondary education. This year they announced their first scholarship recipients and I was fortunate enough to chat with a mother/daughter team who are part of the inaugural cohort.

In the podcast, La’Tia and Payton Johnson (both KC Scholarship recipients) share the trials and tribulations they have gone through to be able to access post-secondary education. They are truly inspiring and remind us that even though there are obstacles, the fight is worth it and to keep chasing your dreams – be that to attend college or pursuing something else.
