Buenas Dias, Bonjour, Hello
Over the last few weeks we’ve been working with Rosetta Stone to produce “The Next Generation of World Language Learning”. Written by two of our EdTech experts, a researcher, and a world language teacher, this paper reviews the current state of world language instruction. In addition, the authors make the case that world language instruction deserves a mention in the conversation around new standards, assessments and blended learning opportunities.
“The Next Generation of World Language Learning” discusses the opportunities that blended learning creates to improve the number of students who can access high-quality world language instruction by describing a vision of the next generation of world language learning.
Carri Schneider, Director of Policy and Research at Getting Smart, adds, “School and district leaders can harness the power of blended language learning to create a generation of graduates equipped with the language skills to thrive in an interconnected world.”
In case you missed it, last week we released a corresponding infographic – “Next-Gen World Language Learning”.

Getting Smart and Rosetta Stone Release New White Paper
“The Next Generation of World Language Learning”
Seattle, Wash., October 15, 2013 – Today, in association with Rosetta Stone, Getting Smart published a white paper titled “The Next Generation of World Language Learning” that describes how technology can improve world language instruction and improve college and career readiness.
Authored by Winifred Kehl, Moss Pike, Carri Schneider and Tom Vander Ark, “The Next Generation of World Language Learning” advocates for accessible, high-quality world language instruction for all students, from elementary through high school. The authors–a researcher, a world language teacher and two experts in the field of educational technology, come together to review the current state of world language instruction and to make the case that world language instruction deserves a place in the conversation around new standards, assessments and blended learning opportunities.
Today only about one in five U.S. Students are studying a world language, a vital component of global competitiveness and beyond that, global competency. “The Next Generation of World Language Learning” discusses the opportunities that blended learning creates to improve the numbers of students who can access high-quality world language instruction by describing a vision of the next generation of world language learning.
“Blended world language learning could help address issues of inequitable student access to world language instruction and address issues of cost-effectiveness,” said author Vander Ark, CEO of Getting Smart. “The growing availability of high-quality online and blended learning resources offer new toolsets and content that can expand student access to world language instruction by complementing or supplementing the current available offerings.”
Schneider, Director of Policy and Research at Getting Smart, adds, “School and district leaders can harness the power of blended language learning to create a generation of graduates equipped with the language skills to thrive in an interconnected world.”
In addition to the paper, the participating organizations also released an infographic called “Next-Gen World Language Learning”.
