After two successful data startups Josh Coates turned his attention to another category with a capabilities gap–learning management systems.  I caught up with Josh at SXSWedu earlier this month.

Devlin Daley and Brian Whitmer co-founded Instructure in 2008 after a Geo Metro tour of 17 college campuses.  Josh joined them in 2010 to help fund raise and build the business.

Josh thinks Instructure will add 300 more higher education campuses to their customer base this year.  Some of the most prolific users are Auburn, Brown, Central Florida, Washington, and Warton.

Instructure is gaining traction in K-12.  In what is likely to be a K-12 turbo booster, Project Lead The Way announced today that they will be using Canvas. PLTW is a leader in U.S. secondary STEM education with more than 4700 schools using the curriculum.  PLTW plans to roll out Canvas this summer.

In January, Instructure launched an open MOOC that gives providers more flexibility in terms of content, length, assessments, and pricing compared to the other guys.

Instructure has more than 200 employees, most of them in the Salt Lake City office.
