While college education costs rise to new heights, the importance of obtaining a degree for future career success becomes more and more pertinent. Many students today from low- and middle-income families who need a college degree to succeed are unable to afford tuition costs. What’s more, research shows that students do not receive enough guidance from counselors in high school to make education decisions around financial aid.
Get Schooled, MTV and the College Board announced this week the launch of its annual 2012 College Dollars Challenge and My College Dollars in an effort to help more low- and middle-income students obtain a college degree. The 2012 College Dollars Challenge, which aims to increase FAFSA submissions, heighten financial management knowledge and generate students’ access to financial support for college. The challenge will run from January 17, 2012 to March 23, 2012. The deadline for school sign up is January 6, 2012.
My College Dollars is a new, free Facebook app aimed at supplying students with the information they need to make sound financial decisions around college. Get Schooled hopes to reach more students on Facebook, a social network that the average student spends more than an hour a day on.
My College Dollars intends to use its Facebook app to match student scholarships, inform students of how to fill out a FAFSA, and increase access to grants and loans. The app will launch January 18, 2012. Students 13 years old and over can use the app to learn more about financial basics of college. Students in schools that don’t allow Facebook access on their computers will be able to access My College Dollars via getscholed.com.
