Summer Break

For most of July in Seattle the mornings are cool, the afternoons are warm, and the sky is blue.  This week the tide has been low most of the day making possible a morning run and an afternoon conference call during a beach stroll.  Crabbers start checking their pots before 5am.  Shortly thereafter, my Jack Russell has dismissed the herons squawking loud enough to wake those the sun hasn’t roused.  We don’t watch much TV because it’s light until almost 10pm and there’s no better place better than the deck swing for watching the sun go down.
Education is a still a seasonal affair.  On a July night like this, one has to appreciate a few days at home in the middle of summer.  Last week, the subject was school improvement in LA; tomorrow it will be new schools in Newark and Brooklyn.  But tonight, the fish started jumping right after the sun set over the Olympics. And it’s a good night to be sitting on the swing with the woman I married 30 years ago today.  We’ve had four good dogs and two good kids and a lot more good days than bad.
One can’t really ask for more: work you care about, people that care about you, and a good place to watch the sun go down.
