About
Opened a teacher-powered learner-centered secondary school west of Minneapolis in 1994 with the goal of leveraging the power of purposeful relationships, community, student-led project-based learning, and experiential education. An elementary school was added in 2013. MNCS spurred development of the Edvisions network of small teacher-led schools featuring self-directed project-based learning and authentic assessment.
Minnesota New Country School (MNCS), located in Henderson, Minnesota, is a public charter school serving students in grades 6 through 12. MNCS is renowned for its innovative, project-based learning model, where students take ownership of their education by designing and completing individual projects under the guidance of advisors.
At MNCS, there are no traditional classrooms or bells. Instead, students work in a flexible, open environment where learning is self-directed and personalized. Advisors provide mentorship and support, helping students set goals, manage projects, and track progress.
The curriculum integrates real-world experiences, critical thinking, and collaboration, with students exploring topics they are passionate about. MNCS also emphasizes community engagement, encouraging students to work on projects that make a meaningful impact locally and beyond.
With its focus on student agency, creativity, and real-world learning, MNCS provides an alternative educational experience that prepares students for college, careers, and lifelong success.
