Kindness Starts with One: Random Acts of Kindness Week 2018

Looking to integrate SEL strategies into the classroom in a simple, tangible, project-based approach? What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day (week) than by sharing random acts of kindness with those you know and love  — and with people whom you don’t know!

The Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Foundation is sure to make Random Acts of Kindness Week (#rakweek2018, #capturekindness) a great one!

RAK Week

Launched in 1995, RAK Week is is an annual opportunity to unite people around the world through kindness. This year, it is observed February 11 through 17, capping off the week with “Random Acts of Kindness Day” on February 17.

This seven-day celebration demonstrates that kindness is contagious. It all starts with one act – one smile, one coffee for a stranger, one favor for a friend. It’s an opportunity for participants to leave the world better than they found it and inspire others to do the same. Since inception, RAK estimates that millions of schools, celebrities, businesses, and partners have participated in these week-long celebrations.

Classroom Resources

Teachers can utilize resources available through their educator resources page. Resources available include free downloadable lesson plans, “how to lead a kindness project” guides and tips to form a kindness club. The curriculum features developmentally appropriate, standards-aligned lessons that teach kids important Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills.

A couple of examples are included below:

Teachers rave about the impact. “Implementing a kindness program makes it easy for educators to model kindness for students,” said Kristen Davis, first-grade teacher in Santa Rosa County, Florida. “I am incorporating this program in my classroom every day. My students have become so much more aware of how kindness affects others because of the lessons we have done in our classroom. Their inspiration has rubbed off on other students through their positive outlook and change in mindset.”

Get Started

This year, here is the specific ask from RAK week organizers:

Please share about that one person who inspires you to be a better human being!

Was it a teacher who saw something in you when no one else did?

Is it a neighbor who mowed your lawn when you were sick?

What about a family member who always encouraged you to do your best?

Maybe it was your friend who comforted you during a difficult time in your life?

We all have someone who has gone above and beyond to show us kindness; someone who shifts our perspective, helps us through painful moments or inspires us to be kinder in our daily lives.

To celebrate RAK Week, snap a photo of that person and share their story! #RAKWeek2018
