Online Kentucky High School Students Outperform National Average 

ORLANDO, Fla. – (April 23, 2014) — Kentucky public school students who work toward their diplomas online outscored the national average on the official pre-ACT tests in 2013, according to FLVS Global and Barren County School District online public high school, the Barren Academy of Virtual and Expanded Learning (BAVEL). Students outscored the national average in every category of the PLAN and EXPLORE tests, with the largest margins occurring in mathematics, science, reading, English and rhetorical skills.  
“Virtual learning isn’t just a click-and-fix. Students are not only doing work that is comparable to a traditional school, but getting a high-quality education with results that outpace the national averages,” said Ryan Rogers, director of FLVS Global.
BAVEL is a fully online, diploma-granting, public school that serves several hundred students in Kentucky. It is one of three online education providers in Kentucky and is the only one that offers a comprehensive curriculum.
BAVEL established its roots as a dropout prevention program in 2004 and began working with FLVS Global, a trusted provider of 6^th-to-12^th grade online learning solutions, in 2011.
“BAVEL began as a high quality option for students at risk of dropping out of our high schools to instead earn a diploma,” said BAVEL co-director Phillip Napier. “However, our program truly flourished when we started to address students’ individual needs. It is our goal to examine each situation to determine how learning in the online environment best fits the needs of each student.”
As the virtual world evolved, administrators began to see how the program could be expanded to serve students from any situation that works better with the flexibility of online learning.
“Today we work with students from many backgrounds who want to fulfill the requirements for graduation, despite struggles or hectic schedules,” said Napier. “Some students have medical issues which prevent them from sitting in a traditional classroom. Other students enjoy professional acting careers, auditioning on Broadway and appearing in films at the Sundance Film Festival, while others are elite athletes with demanding schedules.”
