Parent Trigger back from grave in CA
The Parent Trigger–the power to for a majority of parents to choose the best option for their kids–was dead last week. Â It was given new life by the CA senate today by a one vote majority. Â It faces an uphill battle in the Assembly where a member said, “This is one of those very rare moments in politics where the simple power of a good idea carried the day, even in the face of the most intense opposition.”
Parent Revolution pioneered the bargain: if a majority of parents of students in a struggling schools agree, new charter schools will open, the struggling school will be converted to a charter, or the district will deliver an acceptable improvement plan. Â The bargain puts parents in the driver’s seat for the first time.
Read Executive Director Ben Austin’s opinion piece in the LA Times. Â It was the closing argument for a number of CA senators.
