About
Students from four partner school districts to two Cedar Rapids locations for a half-day program where students learn core academics and 21st century skills through authentic projects connected to community partners.
Iowa BIG, based in Cedar Rapids and Marion, Iowa, is an innovative high school program that reimagines education through student-driven, community-focused learning. Open to students from area school districts, Iowa BIG emphasizes personalized education, real-world projects, and collaboration with local businesses and organizations.
At Iowa BIG, students take charge of their learning by working on projects that address real challenges in their community. These projects span various fields, including technology, healthcare, environmental sustainability, entrepreneurship, and the arts. Students develop critical skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and project management while earning academic credit that aligns with state educational standards.
The program operates in a flexible, non-traditional setting that fosters creativity and independence. Students choose projects based on their interests and passions, and educators, called “coaches,” provide mentorship and guidance to ensure meaningful and impactful learning experiences.
Iowa BIG partners with local businesses, nonprofits, and community leaders to create authentic learning opportunities. These partnerships allow students to engage with professionals, gain hands-on experience, and contribute tangible value to their community.
By integrating academic rigor with practical application, Iowa BIG prepares students for success in college, careers, and civic life. The program’s unique approach has gained national recognition as a model for personalized, real-world education.
