Next Generation Learning Challenges award applications for “new, personalized, blended, mastery-based school capable of generating dramatically higher outcomes for students.”  Getting Smart has been following closely this year because every time NGLC announces a new set of grantees, excitement runs high in the world of education. “NGLC helps to sponsor exemplars that show the rest of us the path forward.” NGLC is helping advance Next-Gen models for schools with every grant they award. $6 Million in Grants for New Blended Learning Schools. Calling all school visionaries and designers: at least $6 million is being awarded to new breakthrough model schools or total redesigns of existing schools. Next Generation Learning Challenges announces the second cycle of its fourth wave of grants to accelerate technology-enabled next-generation learning: 12 new school launch grants totaling $450K each for designers of blended, personalized, competency-based secondary schools opening in the fall of 2014. Categories under consideration include brand-new district and charter schools, restarts, and complete redesigns of existing higher-performing schools. NGLC will also award up to 10 planning grants of $100K each for innovators that are early in design development.
These grants should be of deep interest to educators, innovators, providers, and policymakers who have already taken steps towards these forms of personalized learning, or who have been waiting for the right opportunity to do so in a significant way. These grants build on the twenty new school models NGLC funded in 2012 and on more grants awarded earlier this year. And, if your school is to be located in the city of Chicago or the District of Columbia (DC), you will want to check out the new NGLC Regional Fund challenges launching this fall in those two cities. Special partner supports and additional planning grants are available, with some eligibility changes from the national challenge. (For example, K-5 schools are eligible.).
Time is of the essence, because the deadline for the second grant cycle comes up on December 2 for launch grant proposals. The deadline for the planning grants is January 13.
