White House Announces Second Science Fair Winners

Tuesday, President Obama will host the second White House Science Fair to celebrate winners of its science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) competitions from across the country and announce key steps the Administration and its partners are taking to excel STEM in the U.S.
President Obama is expected to congratulate and view the exhibits of winning students, which include a robot that plays soccer, a toilet that conserves water, an approach to treating cancer, and more. The President will also make remarks about importance of STEM education in the country’s economic future to an audience of students, science educators, and business leaders.
When the Science Fair began in 2010, President Obama said, “If you win the NCAA championship, you come to the White House. Well, if you’re a young person and you produce the best experiment or design, the best hardware or software, you ought to be recognized for that achievement, too.”
Over the past year, the President has made surprise appearances to honor students who produced extraordinary work in STEM for other science fairs such as the Google Science Fair, the New York City Science Fair, and a bus tour through North Carolina and Virginia.
In addition, biotechnology industry leaders developed the Biotechnology Institute’s Scientists in the Classroom, an initiative to inspire 250,000 high school students in the U.S. by 2015 in STEM education and careers. The program, which was launched in 2010, engages life science companies to advance education in their communities and on a national level.
