“All students are digital learners.”  It’s a statement of aspiration and opportunity.  For many students, it’s their reality.   It’s also the preamble to Digital Learning Now!

Digital Learning Now! kicked off a weekly video series highlighting the 10 Elements of High Quality Digital Learning with a three minute summary of Element #1, All Students are Digital Learners.

The video highlights the twin goals of Element #1:

1) states should make access to high quality content and courses available to all students, and

2) states should make content and online courses available to every student at any time.

If the wording seems a bit redundant, it’s because states have erected so many barriers to digital learning.  For example, Florida is a digital leader, but they have restrictions on enrollment based on prior year enrollment.  The Digital Learning Now report outlines the policy principle and attacks specific barriers.

“All students are digital learners” suggest a statewide multi-provider environment with no barriers to enrollment and it suggests that states should be proactive about sharing content and resources with schools and students.

It’s time for state education leaders to plan the pivot to personal digital learning.  At the heart of that plan should be improved access to quality learning experiences for all students.
