“People aren’t really afraid of change, they are afraid of loss.” Alexander Grashow, Cambridge Learning Associates, opened the action network meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative.  “People don’t return winning lottery tickets, but they do worry about a loss of comfort and security.”

“There is heavy investment in the status quo, some deliberate, much subconscious,” said Grashow.  Frustrating to the well-intentioned audience he said, “The people we want to help are invested in the status quo.”   Every bad school has a constituency.

Grashow suggested that we waste time by confusing solvable technical problems with open-ended adaptive problems.

New problems are design challenges that require innovation and may benefit from collaboration—that’s the idea behind the CGI action networks

In a nice closing, Grashow finished with three wishes:

1. Lean into relationships and learn something; challenge the status quo

2. Consider return on sacrifice; what are you asking people to give up?

3. Infuse the work with meaning: adaptive work
