Chip Kimball to Lead Prestigious Singapore School

Dr. Chip Kimball is one of the only district tech directors to become a superintendent.  He made the transition in a community with a lot of tech savvy people—the Lake Washington school district, located in Redmond Washington, home of Microsoft.   Chip has been there more than 15 years, serving as superintendent for the last five years.
This summer Chip is taking on an interesting new challenge as head of the Singapore American School (SAS), what may be the largest and most prestigious international school in the world.   SAS serves about 4,000 students P-12.
SAS is ahead of most international schools regarding the use of educational technology but behind Lake Washington—so digital learning will certainly be on Chip’s agenda.
Chip is convinced that video is the game changer in learning.  He sees an increasing amount of instruction being conducted as video dialog.  He’s looking forward to  algorithms that will queue video and drive performance grouping.
When I asked Chip why in the world he’d want to do this, he said “I’ve been talking about global workplace skills for a decade and I want to fully understanding it on a visceral level, I want to be able to come back and speak with credibility.”
In addition to being tech dude turned administrator, Chip is the only water skiing school superintendent I know.  And he’s on the lake a lot even here in Seattle where it was 80 degrees for about three hours last summer.  Now Chip is moving to a place where the temperature is a monotonous 88 degrees everyday.  He has already located the one place in Singapore where he can water ski.
Dr. Traci Pierce, Chip’s deputy superintendent, will be taking the reins in Lake Washington July 1.  We wish Traci all the best in her new role and we’ll be trying to keep tabs on Chip from across the Pacific.
