NY State DOE Hiring for New Charter Authorizing Role

I am writing with an exciting opportunity. The New York State Education Department is seeking a dynamic leader to head our efforts to transform the Regents’ charter authorizing and oversight activities. Reporting to the Assistant Commissioner of the Office of Innovative School Models (me), the Director of Charter Schools will be responsible for leading and directing the development and implementation of the Regents policies relating to charter schools. The Director will ensure that the charter school initiative is carried out within the larger strategic direction of the Regents, and that all charter schools are viable, quality choice options for families, students, and the community. The Director will manage the Office’s interactions with NYSED staff, districts, charter school support organizations, local education constituents, school operators, and national professional support organizations.

Catalyzed by the recent award of nearly $700M in Race to the Top funds, NYSED is pursuing an ambitious reform agenda to transform K-12 education for our 3.1 million schoolchildren. Charter schools are a central component of our reform strategy. NYSED recently launched the Office of Innovative School Models to house the Board of Regents charter authorizing work, school turnaround work and program evaluation and monitoring work of our State’s persistently lowest achieving schools. The successful candidate will help to shape the new schools vision for the state and work with senior management to coordinate all efforts of the Office of Innovative School Models.
